Tom Selleck Made Sure He Put His Family First So His Marriage Of 33 Years Was Away From The Spotlight & Nurtured

Selleck got married to Mack in 1987, the year he was named PEOPLE's Sexiest Person.

Tom Selleck, most famously known for his role as Richard in the sitcom FRIENDS, got married to model Jacqueline Ray in 1971. At the time, he was at the peak of his career but they went their separate ways eleven years later, in 1982. Since his first relationship had failed, it came as no surprise that he wanted to keep his marriage to Jillie Mack a secret, away from the prying eyes of the public. Selleck got married to Mack in 1987, the year he was named PEOPLE's Sexiest Person. He was in demand, and everyone wanted a piece of him!

Selleck met the love of his life in London, while he was shooting for the film Lassiter, according to Country Living. His co-star at the time, Jane Seymour revealed how Selleck kept telling her about this one amazing musical called Cats. “He kept telling me how great Cats was,” she said to PEOPLE. “I thought it was good, but I couldn’t see going back a dozen times.”

The reason behind this was that Mack was a part of the cast and Selleck was smitten by her. “They had dinner one night and it went on from there,” says her London agent, Bryn Newton.

It seemed like she felt the same way about him, too, because as soon as her contract ended, Jillie Mack dropped everything and moved halfway across the world to be with Selleck. She was by his side when he received the Hollywood Boulevard star in 1986. A year later, they exchanged vows at a Lake Tahoe wedding chapel, making it official. They made sure to keep the whole thing so private that even the minister didn't know whose marriage he was officiating until it was time.

"They were both nervous, like any other couple about to get married," their wedding officiant Rev. David Immel told the magazine. "He was very concerned that the service be heartfelt, very concerned for her that the service be meaningful. He is a very warm, caring man."

A year after saying "I do" the couple welcomed a beautiful baby girl. Despite being so in demand, Selleck thought the best thing to do would be to take a step back from his career and spend some time with his daughter and wife.

They moved to a 65-acre ranch in Ventura County, California, and Selleck quit his hit show Magnum. "I quit Magnum to have a family," he told PEOPLE in 2012. "It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance, and this ranch has helped me do that." How many actors really do that for their family? "We both thought it was the best environment for [Hannah] to grow up," Mack added. Even though he's appeared in a lot of roles since then, his focus has always been his family.

"We don't do anything or make any decisions without consulting each other," he said when his daughter was 10. "And if one of us makes a decision involving Hannah, the other parent completely supports that position, even if you disagree."

Even before his marriage to Mack, he knew his priorities and wanted to keep his family away from the spotlight. "I've found it very difficult to expose my private life and live with it," he said in 1984. "It's important to nurture your marriage," he said. "I think wanting time away from work has been good for that," he added.
